In January 2024, U.S. imports of aluminum plates, sheets and rods jumped to nearly the previous year’s levels.

        U.S. imports of aluminum plates, sheets and rods in January 2024 jumped to nearly the previous year’s level, reaching 98,400 tons, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey. Last year, the United States imported 99,400 tons of aluminum plates, sheets and rods.
        However, starting in February 2023, US imports began to decline, with imports that month totaling 72,900 tons. Imports increased periodically but were lowest in April at 66,500 tonnes. On a monthly basis, US imports of aluminum plate, sheet and rods increased slightly in January 2024 by 12,500 tons from 85,900 tons, an increase of 14.55%.
        Canada, China and South Korea are the top three exporters of aluminum plates, sheets and rods to the United States. Canada exported 21,300 tonnes in January 2024, up 39.22% from 15,300 tonnes in December 2023. On a year-on-year basis, Canadian exports of aluminum plates, sheets and rods to the United States increased 18.33% from 18,000 tonnes.
       In January 2024, Canadian exports of aluminum plates, sheets and rods to the US accounted for 21.65% of total US imports.
       China and South Korea exported 15,800 tons and 9,940 tons of aluminum plates, sheets and rods to the United States, up 27.42% and 13.08%, respectively, from 12,400 tons and 8,790 tons in December 2023.
       Compared to the same period last year, China’s exports to the United States were 22,000 tons, down 28.18%, while South Korea’s exports were 4,390 tons, an increase of 126%.
